Jiuqiu Stories

Jiuqiu Village, located in the Moon Mountains, is a farming Hmong village with a total population of about 1,200 people. It maintains traditional Hmong characteristics and habits, with traditional wooden Hmong hammock buildings and adults wearing Hmong ethnic clothing on a daily basis; everyone communicates in the Hmong language, except for children when they have classes at school.
Jiuqiu Primary School was originally a complete primary school offering classes from pre-school to sixth grade, but due to a lack of teachers, grades 3 through 6 were consolidated into the relatively developed Gayi Village Primary School. Jiuqiu to Gayi is about a twenty-minute drive on a mountainous road, so the students in grades 3 to 6 became boarding students in another village, only going home during holidays. In the mountainous areas of Guizhou, such stories are not uncommon. The lack of resources leads to the merging of primary school in remote areas one after another, concentrating all educational resources in more developed villages or counties. More and more children need to leave their hometowns and go to boarding schools elsewhere. The principal of Jiuqiu Village Primary School, Mr. Wang, expressed his great hope that through the Jiuqiu Children Program, Jiuqiu Primary School will have more resources. Otherwise, in the near future, Jiuqiu Primary School will be completely merged, and the children in pre-school and first and second grade (most of them are around 3-9 years old) will also need to leave their hometowns and board away all year round, forcing them to be separated from their families. This will definitely do more harm than good to the children at this age.
As of 2021, the population between the ages of 6 and 16 of Jiuqiu Village is 234 people, including 156 students in poverty; 19 in preschool, including 15 students in poverty. There are 161 people in primary school, including 104 students in poverty; 40 people in middle school, including 28 students in poverty; 7 people in high school, including 4 students in poverty; and 6 people in secondary school, including 3 students in poverty.
